Writer’s block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work, or experiences a creative slowdown.
I was struggling with writer’s block recently. I couldn’t write a single blog post for months. Whenever I tried to start writing a blog post, I was stuck in the introductory paragraph or somewhere at the beginning. I tried to overcome writer’s block in many ways. Some of them worked and some others didn’t.
And I think these ways to overcome writer’s block would help you too if you are struggling with writer’s block.
At first, I tried to find out the reason for my writer’s block or what is blocking me from writing.
It ain’t easy, we should find it out trying different things.
- Fear could be a possible reason for writer’s block. People are afraid to share the ideas and thoughts in the fear of criticism. A writer shouldn’t be scared to share their thoughts. Show the courage to show your creativity to the public and be the best writer.
- Perfectionism, just don’t wait for everything to be perfect; do it. If you wait for everything to be perfect, you can’t even write a single sentence. And if I waited to find a perfect sentence to start this blog post, I wouldn’t be writing this.
- Time & Environment could be another possible reason for writer’s block. Most of us would be more productive during the early morning than any other time of the day. The environment around you is another important factor for writer’s block. Most of us would love to write in a distraction-free environment. If your place is full of distractions, change the environment you choose to write.
How to Overcome Writer’s block
I wanted to share some of the methods that worked for me. And you know, it ain’t easy to escape from writer’s block. And it may come and go again in long run.
As a writer, you can’t get rid of it permanently. But these ideas can help you get rid of it, whenever it comes to stop you from doing what you love (I mean writing).
These are the things I did and you can try these methods and share what worked for you.
#1. Listen to songs or watch movies
If you are really feeling stuck, then watch some movies that inspire or listen to some awesome music. But please, don’t overdo it. Limit it to one movie a day.
I used to watch some parts of movies I like when I felt stuck. I love some scenes of my favorite movies and I watch just those parts. So, I can save some time there. If I watch the whole movie, it would take around 2 to 2.5 hours. And we can’t afford to waste that much time, right?
I listen to my favorite tracks too! It helps to focus on writing. Usually, I listen to slow and melody songs without any distractions.
You can also try Brain.fm for some awesome music. It’s magical. You should try it once.
#2. What about a walk?
It’s good for health too! You should try walking whenever you are out of ideas.
Get some fresh air outside the room and moving the body gives some energy, right?
Ok, now, don’t stare at that image.
#3. Choose a different environment.
You might not be able to write sometime because of the environment you chose to write.
Choose a place you won’t be distracted. Place with some pure air would be great. But that’s something you should decide. Find a place you are comfortable to write. Try to avoid distractions.
#4. Choose a different time to write.
You need to work a bit on this to find the best time for you to write. Some are productive during the early morning and some others are productive at some other time of the day.
Try to write at different times a day and choose a time in which you were highly productive. And use your least productive time for any other things.
#5. Drink some water.
Drinking water is good for health, especially if you drink a glass of water right after you woke up. It will keep you fresh the whole day. You could be more productive also.
#6. Coffee is always a productivity-boosting drink.
Coffee helps you to stay energetic and work longer. It helps you to stay focused on your work. But you should limit the cups of coffee a day to 1-4 cups. Drinking a moderate amount of coffee is beneficial to health, but it has some disadvantages too!
If you have high cholesterol or you are caffeine sensitive, pregnant or a child (or a parent of one), you should pay attention to coffee drinking.
For others, reasonable amounts (1-6 cups a day) coffee can be good for you. It can prevent serious diseases, boost your mind and muscles, and even help you with weight loss. Remember, as long as you drink toxin free, speciality coffee and brew it with care, you can and should be enjoying it knowing it’s good for you. – WarriorCoffee.com.
#7. Write points and expand it later.
During those times, we don’t feel like writing and we would be confused, how to start writing?
Most of the time, some points alone comes to our mind. But at that moment, we won’t be able to expand it. So, write down those points somewhere or type it down on the notepad and expand it later when you can write.
#8. Read some books that you love.
If you are a writer, then you will definitely love reading books. Why don’t you read some books? It will help you to be more creative and gives you some amazing ideas.
#9. Exercise or play some games.
Do some exercise or play some outdoor games. You will feel more energetic and you can stay focused on writing after that. Take a bath after the exercise. You will definitely feel the energy.
#10 Write, don’t stop.
Write anything that comes to your mind. Write and write until you overcome writer’s block. This is the best and final tip to overcome it.
